"Untitled - Portrait of Henrietta Matson"

Title

"Untitled - Portrait of Henrietta Matson"

Subject

Henrietta Matson--India--Spence Family--Asia--Fisk Jubilee Singers

Description

A commercially-produced image depicting missionary Henrietta Matson during her time living in India. The reverse of this image does not feature any writing in ink. However, Matson mentioned in her letters to the Spence family that she had a portrait taken, and she sent copy to the Spences. This picture was taken by the traveling, Madras-based German photographers Wiele and Klein.
This image was one of multiple commercially-produced images of various places and peoples in Asia gifted to the Spence family by Henrietta Matson. The Fisk Jubilee Singers transported several items (including pictures) from Matson to the Spence family in 1890.
