Subject
Henrietta Matson--Correspondence--Spence Family--India--Asia--Fisk--Missionaries
Description
A letter from Henrietta Matson to Professor Adam Spence. Matson sent this letter from Akola, Berar, India to the Spence Family in Nashville, TN, USA. In addition to relaying some of her observations of India and thanking the Spences for sending money, Matson comments upon racism in the United States and in British India. For instance, she states "what a dreadful state of things prevails in the south in regard to the coloured people. At least according to the papers, it seems to grow worse, perhaps because I am not in it. I begin to believe that color is an awful thing and I never came to hear anything more of the equality that exists abroad as far as color goes. The English here are worse than the most rabid Americans.”
