Subject

Henrietta Matson--Correspondence--Spence Family--Fisk Jubilee Singers--India--Asia--Fisk--Missionaries

Description

This is a letter written by Henrietta Matson addressed to Elizabeth Spence. In this letter, Matson states that she will soon depart Calcutta and live in Rangoon. Moreover, she provides detail of the Fisk Jubilee Singers' arrival in Calcutta. She invited the Loudins, Maggie Porter, and other members of the Jubilee Singers to "a Church Tea" the night of their arrival. Matson encouraged the Singers to give a spontaneous free concert at the Church Tea," but they firmly refused. The next day Matson met up with Mrs. Loudin and some of the Singers at their hotel. Matson also mentions that another missionary in Calcutta "invited then all to tea Saturday night, intending to have the missionaries and a few Bengali khans meet them." While Mr. and Mrs. Loudin said they would not attend, Maggie Carnes and Pattie Malone indicated that they would be there.

Unfortunately, the last page of this letter - which contained more information about the Jubilees' arrival in Calcutta - is missing.
